SVA's Artist Residency Programs

“I grew up in Taiwan, this is my first time in New York, everything amazes me, I want to create works that can only be made  in New York - my daily life here, such as the food I ate,  Receipts from stores, aluminum cans I found on the road, and even chewing gum given to me by my artist friend in the art class.”

The Fish Series

I've always wanted to come to New York City to experience its artistic energy, freedom, and meet an eclectic group of people. I came alone, to make new friends, and have luck and inspiration be my guide.

My first week here I got homesick and lost my appetite eating the local food. I craved fish soup my mother makes, her steamed sea bass in an electric pot, and my brother's favorite fish eyes.

I was shocked to discover how little of an entire fish is eaten here.  In Asia we don't let any part of it go to waste. Asians think of McDonald's as the symbol of America's fast food culture, and after one month I finally had dinner there. I ended up feeling liket i'm the fish, overwhelmed by the fast paced overwhelming New York City American culture.
